In response to significant public opposition and environmental concerns, the Central Government of India has directed the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to re-examine the Nayakkarpatti tungsten mine block in Tamil Nadu. The GSI has been tasked with exploring the possibility of redefining the block’s boundaries to exclude areas designated as biodiversity heritage sites. Concurrently, the Tamil Nadu government has been requested to pause the issuance of the Letter of Intent to the preferred bidder, Hindustan Zinc Ltd, until further notice. This decision follows numerous representations opposing the auction of the block due to its inclusion of ecologically sensitive zones. The Nayakkarpatti tungsten block, covering over 20.16 square kilometers, was proposed for auction in February 2024. Despite prior consultations, no objections were raised by the state government before the auction. However, following the declaration of the preferred bidder, concerns emerged regarding the presence of a biodiversity heritage site within the block area. In light of these developments, the Centre has taken steps to ensure that mining activities do not compromise environmental conservation efforts.
