The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated a significant biomining project to reclaim the Kodungaiyur dumpyard, a 50-year-old site spanning 352 acres and containing approximately 74 lakh cubic meters of waste. This initiative aims to address environmental and public health concerns by processing and repurposing the accumulated waste.

To execute this project, the GCC has awarded contracts totaling ₹640 crore to three private firms. The project is divided into six packages, with each firm responsible for specific sections of the dumpyard. Anna University has been appointed as the project management consultant to oversee the overall supervision, monitoring, and certification of the biomining efforts.

Among the awarded firms, Blue Planet’s Zigma Global Environ Solutions Pvt Ltd has secured 50% of the contract. Zigma is recognized for its successful reclamation projects, including the Perungudi dumpyard in Chennai, where it processed over 1.73 million cubic meters of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and reclaimed 96 acres of land. Their expertise is expected to significantly contribute to the successful reclamation of the Kodungaiyur site.

The project is expected to be completed within two years, with the collaborative efforts of the GCC, the awarded firms, and Anna University. This initiative represents a substantial step toward sustainable waste management and environmental restoration in Chennai.
