The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has identified significant rare earth element (REE) deposits in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Manavalakurichi, Midalam, and Vayakallur regions. These areas are known for their monazite-bearing beach sand placer deposits, which are rich in REEs.

Monazite is a primary source of REEs, containing elements such as cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, and yttrium, which are essential for various high-tech applications, including electronics, renewable energy technologies, and defense systems. The identification of these deposits in Tamil Nadu positions the state as a significant contributor to India’s rare earth supply chain.

The GSI’s exploration efforts have been part of a broader initiative to augment resources for critical minerals. Since the enactment of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act in 2015, the GSI has increased its focus on critical minerals, including REEs, to support the nation’s economic growth and technological advancement.

The discovery of these REE deposits in Tamil Nadu underscores the importance of continued geological surveys and exploration activities to enhance India’s self-reliance in critical minerals. This development is expected to bolster the domestic supply of REEs, reduce dependence on imports, and contribute to the growth of sectors reliant on these essential materials.
