The Indian government has officially launched the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an allocation of ₹16,300 crore. This strategic initiative aims to establish a framework for self-reliance in critical minerals, which are essential for the country’s green energy transition and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing. The mission will focus on the exploration, processing, and recycling of vital minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements, thereby reducing India’s dependence on imports and securing its mineral supply chains. The NCMM represents a collaborative effort, uniting various ministries, industries, research and development institutions, and global think tanks to ensure a sustainable supply of these crucial resources. Additionally, the government anticipates an investment of ₹18,000 crore from public sector undertakings and other companies, bringing the total projected outlay to ₹34,300 crore over the next seven years. This comprehensive approach underscores India’s commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in critical minerals, which are indispensable for clean energy technologies such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and battery manufacturing.
