NLC India Limited (NLCIL), formerly known as Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited, is actively expanding its lignite mining operations in Tamil Nadu to support its growing power generation capacity. The company operates several opencast lignite mines in the region, including Mine-I, Mine-IA, and Mine-II, which collectively contribute to its substantial lignite production.

To meet the fuel requirements of its upcoming power projects, NLCIL is developing Mine-III with a capacity of 11.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This mine will supply lignite to the proposed Thermal Power Station-II Second Expansion, a 1,320 MW plant at Neyveli. The project is currently in the land acquisition and site preparation phase.

In addition to traditional power generation, NLCIL is diversifying into alternative energy sources. The company is investing approximately ₹4,394 crore in a lignite-to-methanol project at Neyveli, aiming for completion by March 2027. This initiative aligns with the central government’s coal gasification plan, promoting sustainable utilization of lignite resources.

These strategic expansions and diversification efforts underscore NLCIL’s commitment to enhancing energy production while adopting environmentally sustainable practices in Tamil Nadu.
