The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution opposing the proposed tungsten mining project in Nayakkarpatti, Madurai district. The resolution, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, urged the Central Government to cancel the mining rights granted to Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL). The move came after widespread public protests, environmental concerns, and opposition from political parties and local communities who feared the project would have severe ecological and socio-economic impacts.

The proposed mining site is located in an ecologically sensitive region, and locals expressed concerns over its potential to disrupt agriculture, deplete groundwater resources, and damage biodiversity. Farmers and residents argued that mining activities could threaten their livelihoods by contaminating soil and water sources. Environmental activists also warned that extracting tungsten in the area could lead to irreversible damage to the region’s fragile ecosystem.

Following the intense public outcry and the assembly resolution, the Central Government officially annulled the auction of the mining project. The government acknowledged the concerns raised by the state and emphasized that no mining activity would proceed without local consent. This decision is seen as a major victory for local communities and environmental activists in their fight against unsustainable mining practices.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reaffirmed Tamil Nadu’s commitment to protecting its natural resources and ensuring that any industrial or mining project aligns with the interests of the people and the environment. He also emphasized that the state government would not permit any project that threatens the well-being of its citizens.

The cancellation of the tungsten mining project in Madurai highlights the growing emphasis on sustainable development, environmental protection, and the role of public participation in policy decisions. This decision marks a significant precedent for future mining projects in Tamil Nadu and across India, reinforcing the importance of community involvement and environmental considerations in industrial development.
