In November 2024, Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K. Ponmudi announced that the state government would reject any applications for tungsten mining in Arittapatti, Madurai district. He emphasized that Hindustan Zinc Limited had not submitted any application to the state for mining activities. Ponmudi highlighted that Arittapatti is a designated Biodiversity Heritage Site, and the government is committed to preserving its ecological integrity.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also expressed strong opposition to the proposed mining project, citing concerns over environmental degradation and potential harm to local communities. He assured that the state government would not permit such activities in the region.
In response to these concerns, the Union Ministry of Mines announced in January 2025 that it had annulled the auction of the Nayakkarpatti tungsten mineral block in Madurai district. This decision was made after detailed deliberations, considering the importance of the biodiversity heritage site and the government’s commitment to protecting traditional rights.
The annulment of the mining project has been widely regarded as a victory for environmental conservation and the protection of local communities in Tamil Nadu.
