The Trichy Corporation has been actively engaged in biomining efforts to address the city’s waste management challenges. In August 2024, the corporation initiated Phase III of the biomining project at the Ariyamangalam dump yard, aiming to remove 6.1 lakh tonnes of waste. This phase focuses on extracting waste both on the surface and from depths of up to six feet below ground. The project is expected to take approximately a year to complete.
To support these ongoing biomining activities, there is a pressing need for a temporary waste processing site. Currently, the corporation lacks immediate plans for such a facility, which has led to concerns about the accumulation of fresh waste during the biomining process. Establishing a temporary processing site would facilitate the segregation and treatment of waste, ensuring that the biomining efforts do not result in additional environmental issues.
In response to these challenges, the Trichy Corporation has prioritized the construction of a Bio-CNG plant to enhance waste recycling and improve air quality. The corporation has opted for a public-private partnership (PPP) model to undertake the construction of the Bio-CNG plant, which is expected to process a significant portion of the city’s waste.
Additionally, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy has been involved in providing consultancy services for waste management projects in the region. Their expertise includes reviewing implementation plans for the scientific closure of municipal solid waste dumpsites and conducting environmental assessments, which can be valuable in supporting the corporation’s waste management initiatives.
